As in the first game the previous week, Cumbernauld United started the stronger side and immediately went on the offensive. A poor goalkick by Paul Kerr in the first minute fell to Steve Smith but his resulting shot was well saved by Kerr and the the rebound was knocked past. Soon after, Michael Shiels was allowed to carry the ball from the halfway line to the edge of the box where he squared to John Mcvoy who should have done better than shot wide. However, minutes later the visitors deservedly took the lead. Steve Smith collected the ball down the left and when his cut-back from the bye-line found James McGOWAN unmarked six yards out he easily stabbed the ball past Kerr to put the New Towners ahead.

As Cumbernauld threatened to run riot, United mounted their first real attack on the quarter hour mark. Brian Fleming won a free-kick on the right wing some twenty five yards out and, when Gerry Ganner's resulting cross cum shot found Alan Prosser stranded in no mans land, the ball cannoned of the bar and was cleared to safety.

This close call resulted in Blackburn begining to force the pace and midway through the first half a gilt edged chance to equalise was earned. A through ball found the eager Fleming running clear and as he moved into the box Prosser brought him down. Jamie McCormick stepped forward to take the penalty kick but the visiting ''keeper redeemed himself by getting down to his right to push the ball out.

Seven minutes later a short corner was played to McCormick on the left and he fired in a fierce, angled shot which was parried by Prosser and in the resulting scramble the ball was pushed past for a fruitless corner kick. With ten minutes to go in the half, Cumbernauld almost increased their lead when a corner from the left found Alan Gordon unmarked but his header came back off Kerr's right hand post and was cleared to safety.

Blackburn came out for the second half the more determined side but almost fell further behind after a couple of minutes when a cross from the right found McAvoy unmarked in the box but Kerr again done well to push the shot past. The equaliser, however, came soon after. A Fleming through ball found Colin PENMAN in the clear and, with the New Town defence looking for offside, he calmly rounded the 'keeper and tapped the ball home. Pushing hard now, United nearly took the lead for the first time in the sixty third minute when a McCormick cross from the left found Damien Byrne eight yards out but his well timed header came back off the bar.

The game was now turning into an end to end attle with both teams coming close to scoring in a frantic sixty second spell. First, the home defence was caught square when McAvoy collected the ball and bore down on goal but his shot from just inside the box was well saved by the inspired Kerr. From this close shave, Blackburn went straight up the park when a ball out of defence found Byrne on the right with Colin Gray claiming offside. Byrne galloped towards goal but again he was denied by the woodwork when his stinging shot hit Prosser's left hand post.

However, with the tie going into the last nine minutes Blackburn were not to be denied. An over hit Alan Redmond pass caught the visiting defence sleeping,
PENMAN
ran in and challenged Prosser for the 50-50 ball and, as it broke free, the prolific striker poked it over the line from ten yards. In the dying seconds Byrne was unlucky not to add a third when, with Cumbernauld pushing everyone forward, he collected the ball on the halfway line and ran in on goal only to see Prosser gather when he tried to round him.
