Craig Young then fired a free-kick high over the bar as the break was reached without either net being ruffled.

Seven minutes after the resumption another Young free-kick provided the next threat but McQuillan's header went over the top. Next, Young turned his way into a yard or two of space on the right and lifted a terrific cross onto the back post where James Mildren had peeled off his marker to send a header goalwards that appeared to strike Fyffe on the arm but the loud penalty appeals were ignored by referee Mr. Macrae. Campbell then sent McQuillan in on the left but Hamilton touched his shot behind for a corner that came to nothing. However, the very next Blackburn flag kick was to prove much more fruitful, Campbell measuring it in from the left and into the heart of the box where McQUILLAN rose the highest to head the ball past Hamilton and into the net for his 37th goal of the season. McQuillan then almost got his second when he shielded the ball well from Tinning to turn and race goalwards but his right foot flick was blocked by Hamilton who had raced from his line to narrow down his angles. A lung bursting run forward on the break by John Drummond then almost brought the big central defender his sixth goal of the season but McQuillan's delivery was just a little over hit and Drummond couldn't get the desired purchase or direction on his header. The McQuillan goal, though, was enough as Blackburn saw the game out comfortably to earn their place in the 2017/18 Premier League.

Blackburn made the short trip to a venue where they have struggled in the past looking for a win that would secure promotion to the Premier League but had 'keeper Gavin King to thank in the early moments when Tinning's long throw found ex-Blackburn man Nicky Miller on the back post but King touched his half volley onto and around the post. At the other end Danny Campbell burst clear on the right but when Andy McQuillan met his low ball across the face of goal he could only direct his shot into the side netting. Another Tinning throw then caused concern in the Blackburn area again but King was able to save a header that came from amongst a ruck of players. At the other end it was then a Ewan Herriot throw-in  that created panic in a defence with McQuillan's head on reaching Campbell but his hitch-kick after a piece of excellent control   was  saved  by  Hamilton  in  the  home  goal.
