After disposing of two Division A sides and two fellow Division B sides en-route to our first Final, a hopeful United side travelled east to Broxburn Athletic's Albyn Park followed by a support who were eager to witness silverware being claimed by a Blackburn Junior team for the first time since New Blackburn Athletic had stormed to the League Championship some twenty-odd years previously. However, after losing the League Cup Final to Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic a few weeks earlier, Division A opponents Ormiston Primrose were equally as determined to end the season with the MRS Cup resting in their trophy cabinet.
United surged forward from the whistle and once again it was the prolific partnership of the powerful Colin Penman and the pacy Brian 'Kiddie' Fleming who were finding space to trouble the opposition rearguard, both players going close to finding the elusive opening goal. However, in a rare break into the Blackburn half in the early exchanges it was Primrose who took the lead, Robin RAE calmly stroking home a seventeenth minute penalty. Minutes later Penman threatened once more, forcing the Ormiston 'keeper to tip a fierce drive just past. Next up was Fleming who turned full-back Cowan not once but twice only to see his tempting cross elude his inrushing team mates. Despite this continued dominance, the East Lothian sides defence couldn't be breached and agonisingly it was RAE who doubled his personal goal tally in the Final, beating the offside trap to slot past the diving Paul Kerr.
The second period followed much the same pattern as that of the first but, for one of the few times during the season, the strike partnership that had created havoc amongst defences throughout the Region was firing blanks, despite linking well. Indeed, only a fine save from Kerr prevented Cowan from adding to the Blackburn woes. Going into the closing quarter of an hour, the Primrose bench were frantically signalling their charges to defend further up the field as United continued to push them back and although both Fleming and Penman came ever closer to notching a goal that would have set up a grandstand finish it was not to be. The elusive chase for silverware was at an end for another campaign.
