A Danny Campbell  twenty yard  pop at goal after  just five
minutes  was pushed  around  the  post by  Wilson  in the
home  goal  as Blackburn  settled first  on a  bitterly  cold
afternoon  in  Fife. Not  long  thereafter  Sid Easton set up
Gary Smith  for a  strike  from the right hand corner  of the
eighteen yard box  which took a  deflection off  Bateson to
make Wilson's full length  save to the bottom  right  all the
more   impressive.  Keeping   up  the   pressure, a   Ross
Williamson  cross from the  right saw Campbell  direct the
ball back across goal for Smith to get his head on but, this
time, his  effort didn't unduly  test Wilson before  the Berts
only real venture  forward  ended when  Gibson  hit a  shot
from distance  which  sailed  well  over. The  opening  goal
eventually  did  arrive  for United  four minutes after the half
hour had been reached, a long throw from Darren McIntosh
being knocked on by Lee Suchinskyj for Campbell to sneak
it into SMITH'S path and he spun to lash home from around
ten yards out. At the other end Schiavone took advantage of a slip to race through on Michael Tugman but a perfectly judged Alan Brown block denied him any sort of shooting opportunity. In the fortieth minute Blackburn's lead was deservedly doubled and it was SMITH'S sharpness to the fore again, the striker getting to Easton's near post corner to flick a boot at the ball and send it in at Wilson's bottom right. However, United couldn't get to the interval unscathed and just before the break a Perrie free-kick found BARRATT in space to head past the helpless Tugman.

Disappointingly, the second half started as the first had finished for Blackburn, Schiavone's delivery finding HUSH who, like his central defensive partner before him, had little difficulty in heading home from the middle of the six yard box. Two minutes later Liam Allison hit a cross cum shot from out on the left which Wilson spectacularly tipped away just as it looked like it might be sneaking in. Tugman, too, was called into action to prevent the hosts pulling ahead when he tipped Barratt's free-kick over the top. A little after the hour mark Smith turned Grierson on the left of the Lochgelly box to hit the byeline and pull the ball back for Campbell but his side foot effort from sixteen yards flew inches too high before substitute Chris Simpson came to United's rescue at the other end, clearing Seath's shot off the line after the big striker had taken advantage of a fortunate break of the ball to barrel clear. However, the Berts did hit the front moments later and, once again, it was Blackburn's defensive frailties in the air that were exposed, BARRATT rising at the far post to head home Perrie's delivery from close in. The game was back on level terms within two minutes though, SMITH grabbing his hat-trick by diverting Fraser Spence's shot from the edge of the area past the sprawling Wilson. An off target Campbell volley from an Allison delivery and another top drawer save from Wilson right at the death ensured the teams were not to be separated.
