plus effort that lacked just a little in accuracy before Martin Lawrie headed another Young corner over the top and Gowans threatened down the right once more, firing an angled shot across the face of goal that crept just past to ensure the half ended goalless.

Young and Gowans linked at the outset of the second period for the latter to hit a shot that was half blocked by McManus and as the ball squeezed past the defender his goalkeeper was quick to react to nullify any remaining danger. A raking Young pass from right to left then found Chris Marshall in space and when he pulled the ball back for Gowans the youngsters shot was again blocked after he'd turned neatly into a yard of space. Moments later Lawrie bundled MacDuff to the ground on the edge of the United area but Gavin King was equal to the resultant free-kick from Small before, almost exactly midway through the half, Blackburn eventually opened the scoring when, with his first touch after coming on as a replacement for Fraser Spence, Gary CALVEY peeled off his marker to bullet home a header from a Young corner. However, the lead was short lived as, seven minutes later, Calvey miscued a clearance that resulted in a corner kick that Byrne delivered for DOIG to head powerfully past King. Lawrie then delivered an enticing ball across the six yard box that found no takers as United went hunting a winner and a little less than ten minutes later it arrived, another Young corner arriving in the heart of the YM box where John DRUMMOND managed to get the merest of touches to it to send the ball goalwards, striking the unlucky Fenton on the way to end up creeping into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Mildren almost added a third two minutes from time but could only direct Calvey's cut back straight into the hands of Mushet and the points were sealed four minutes into added time when King was both quick and brave to dive at the feet of Doig to prevent him getting onto the end of a long free-kick shelled into his box.

United took to the field in front of what appeared to be the smallest home crowd of the season so far - just what does the club have to do to encourage the good people of Blackburn to come out in support of the team? - with top scorer Andy McQuillan restored to the starting line-up and he was almost on the end of a whipped Aaron Gowans delivery from the right, but he couldn't quite stretch sufficiently to get a boot on it with the goal waiting. Gowans was the architect of the next opportunity too but when he laid a ball back into the path of Ewan Herriot the fullbacks cross could only be headed into the hands of Mushet by the arriving McQuillan. The games next chance then came from a Craig Young corner on the left that James Mildren headed back across goal where McQuillan again was just out of reach as he stretched to try and direct it goalwards.  At the other  end Fenton hit a twenty  yards
