United's final pre-season friendly almost got off to the perfect start when Chris Marshall and Andy McQuillan combined to send Ross Mitchell in behind the visitors defence but the big striker dragged his shot past the left hand upright. For the Glasgow side, Thomson curled a twenty five yard kick around the Blackburn wall to force Darren Mitchell into a fine diving save before being called into action again moments later to hold Rodden's header from a Hanlon cross. The 'Shire then had the ball in the net just before the half hour mark but Kirkwood was adjudged to have been offside when connecting with O'Donnell's cross. O'Donnell himself then came close on forty minutes but his curler from the edge of the area crept past.

When Martin Lawrie faked to take a twenty two yard free-kick after an hour McQuillan took advantage of the defensive wall's confusion to hit the dead ball narrowly past the right hand post. McQuillan then came close twice more when first taking Fraser Cormack's pass to spin and hit a shot over the top and then when connecting with Gordon Wilson's cross to the back post only to head wide. With just thirteen minutes remaining Hanlon got in on United's right for the visitors only to be upended by a Lawrie tackle that referee Mr. MacKinnon deemed worthy of a penalty and KIRKWOOD stepped up to lash past Mitchell for the games opening goal. Searching for a late equaliser McQuillan almost found it when Marshall and Cormack linked to set him up for an effort he could only hit straight at Calder but, with sixty seconds of added time played, the prolific striker eventually did find the net when Cormack took advantage of a loose defensive pass to whip in a terrific cross that McQUILLAN bulleted past Calder with his head.
