Eighteen minutes had come and gone in the fourth of United's pre-season friendlies when a long ball forward was flicked on by the head of Andy McQuillan into the path of Dean MACARTHUR who, after making ground to the edge of the area, flashed an effort past McFarlane for the games opening goal. Sixty seconds later a Danny Campbell angled drive was well stopped by the 'keeper as Blackburn looked to double their early advantage. However, ten minutes from the break the lead did indeed become two when a slack pass back to the Dunipace custodian put him in all sorts of trouble and his hurried clearance clattered off the closing McQUILLAN to roll into an unguarded net.
A slew of second half substitutes resulted in the game losing a bit of its shape and its impetus but McQuillan went close with a header back across goal that crept just over after he had been picked out by a Campbell delivery midway through the half. McQUILLAN then went close again five minutes from time when his effort from a tightening angle on the left was palmed past the post but with the next meaningful attack the striker was better rewarded when he received a pass from Ross Williamson to curl a belter past the diving McFarlane. Almost right on time Campbell found the net with a similar effort but his strike was ruled out thanks to a marginal offside decision.
