charged down Anderson’s follow up flew narrowly over. Just before the break excellent work by Young on the left saw him make space for a cross that was only just out of reach for the arriving Gowans and McQuillan.
Three minutes after the restart another Young delivery from the left made it all the way to the back post where McQuillan appeared to be impeded while going for the ball but the referee waived away the penalty appeals before, sixty seconds later, incurring further wrath from the visiting bench when denying a clear corner after Tansey touched Gary Calvey’s rasping drive past his left hand post. A Boggie corner at the other end found the head of Fleming but he failed to trouble Gavin King. Just before the hour mark United made a double substitution with Ross Williamson and Danny Campbell replacing Chris Marshall and Gary Calvey and it was Williamson who almost made an immediate impact, stepping onto a loose ball and crashing a twenty five yard effort off the underside of Tansey’s bar. McQuillan was quickest to the rebound and did well to direct the wickedly bouncing ball goalwards but Tansey did even better to palm the effort away. However, two minutes later Blackburn were presented with a golden chance to regain the lead when Campbell chested Young’s delivery down into the path of McQuillan who was clumsily bundled over by Fisher for a penalty that captain Martin LAWRIE lashed into the bottom left hand corner. McQuillan then danced to the edge of the eighteen yard box before unleashing a shot that crept past the right hand post and then sent another effort from similar distance high and wide from a Campbell cut back as United forced the pace. Campbell himself then might have done better when thumping a shot against Tansey’s legs with team mates in better position and looking to be set up. Two minutes from time McQuillan and Campbell linked with the latter rolling a ball to the feet of Williamson whose shot scraped wide. Seconds into time added on an Inglis glancing header caused a moments concern for Blackburn but slipped wide.

United had the ball in the net as early as the fourth minute when Andy McQuillan was on hand to guide Craig Young’s cross from an Aaron Gowans pass behind Tansey in the home goal but referee Mr. McGregor ruled the effort out in the belief that the striker had drifted offside. However, two minutes later Gowans was again the creator with a pull back from the right that McQUILLAN despatched first time from just inside the area to open the scoring. With Blackburn bossing both possession and territory the hosts had to dig deep to get a foothold in the match and when the opportunity arose to do so they took it, BOGGIE picking himself up after being sent crashing to the ground just inside the box by James Mildren to thump the resultant penalty in off the right hand post. Moments later the St Marks Park men might have sneaked ahead but when Pennycuik’s shot was
